iPhone voicemail to text, without the carrier fee
Your iPhone can transcribe voicemails — when it feels like it. Upload the audio here instead and get accurate text in seconds, free, in 90+ languages.
iPhones have transcribed voicemails since iOS 10: open Phone → Voicemail, tap a message, and the transcript appears above the play button. Carriers even sell it as an add-on — Verizon charges $2.99/month for "Voicemail to Text for iPhone."
The catch is that it fails constantly. If your carrier doesn't support visual voicemail transcription, your voicemail language isn't English or Spanish, or the audio is muddy, you get the dreaded "Transcription Not Available" — and no way to try again. And if you saved or forwarded a voicemail as an audio file, the built-in feature can't touch it at all.
That's the gap this page fills: share the voicemail's audio to Files, upload it here, and read the transcript in seconds. It works on any iPhone, any carrier, in 90+ languages — and the first three transcriptions every day are free.
When to transcribe here instead
Built-in transcription needs carrier support and a matching language. When it refuses, uploading the audio file just works.
A voicemail exported as audio — for records, disputes, or family messages — is invisible to the Phone app. Upload the file here.
Carrier transcription covers English and Spanish. Whisper handles 90+ languages and detects the language automatically.
Questions, answered
Does iPhone convert voicemail to text automatically?
On supported carriers, yes: open Phone → Voicemail and tap a message to see its transcript above the play button. iOS 16 and later also offer Live Voicemail, which transcribes an incoming call in real time. Both depend on your carrier and language settings.
Why does my iPhone say "Voicemail Transcription Not Available"?
Usually one of four things: your carrier doesn't support visual voicemail transcription, your voicemail language isn't a supported one (English and Spanish are the common set), the audio is too unclear, or iOS needs an update. Fixes to try: update iOS and carrier settings, check that Siri's language matches the voicemail, reset network settings — or skip all of it and upload the audio file here.
How much does Verizon's Voicemail to Text cost?
Verizon sells "Voicemail to Text for iPhone" as a $2.99/month add-on, in English and Spanish. Other carriers vary. Transcribing the same voicemail here is free for three files a day.
Can I transcribe a voicemail I saved as a file?
Yes — that's exactly what this tool is for. Share the voicemail to Files (or AirDrop it), then upload the audio. m4a, amr, mp3, wav and more are supported.
Does this work for Android voicemails too?
The uploader doesn't care what recorded the audio. Samsung, Google Fi, or any carrier's voicemail that you can save or share as a file will transcribe the same way.
Is my voicemail private?
Your file is processed in memory to produce the transcript and is never stored. We keep no copy of your audio.
