AI medical dictation, explained

Ambient AI scribes promise to hand clinicians back the hour a day they lose to notes. How the category works, who the main players are — and when a plain transcription tool does the job.

AI medical dictation has split into two very different products. The one getting the funding is the ambient AI scribe: it listens to the patient visit (with consent), then drafts the SOAP note, assessment and plan in your template, ready to push into the EHR. The clinician edits and signs instead of writing from scratch.

The pitch is working because the pain is real — physician surveys cited by the AMA put the keyboard tax at roughly an hour a day, and ambient-scribe adoption in US clinics has been one of the fastest rollouts in health tech. Freed, DeepScribe, Heidi Health, Sunoh.ai, ScribeMD and Chartnote are the names that keep showing up in 2026 comparisons.

The other product is older and simpler: dictation and transcription for the words a clinician chooses to speak — referral letters, consult notes dictated from scratch, research interviews, admin. No patient-conversation capture, no EHR integration, no clinical-data pipeline. That's the half a general tool like this one handles: upload the recording, get clean text, paste it where it goes.

Choosing between them

1
EHR integration decides most of it

The scribe's value is a draft note where you already work. Confirm it writes into your EHR (and your note template) before comparing anything else — a great scribe outside your workflow is a transcription toy.

2
Check the compliance paperwork

Clinical audio is protected health information. Any tool touching it needs a signed BAA and a clear answer on where audio lives and how long it's kept. Ask for it in writing during the trial, not after you've recorded a week of visits.

3
Trial on real clinic days

Every vendor demos well. The differences show up on a packed day: how much editing the draft actually needs, how it handles accents and multiple speakers, and whether it keeps up back-to-back. Use the free trial on normal days, not demo material.

The dedicated medical scribes

  1. 1
    Freed
    Most-recommended independent
Web · iOS · macOS — free trial, then subscription

The ambient scribe most often recommended by clinicians in online communities, and the most-visited independent in the category. It learns your note style and formats the visit note to match. Start here if you're a solo clinician or small practice evaluating the category.

  2. 2
    DeepScribe
    Enterprise standard
    EHR-integrated — custom pricing

One of the oldest names in ambient documentation, built around deep EHR integration and specialty-specific note customization. The realistic choice when procurement, security review and a large deployment are part of the conversation.

  3. 3
    Heidi Health
    International reach
Web — free tier for clinicians

Melbourne-originated scribe with wide international adoption and a generous free tier to trial on real clinic days. Publishes unusually detailed documentation on how its transcription and note generation work.

  4. 4
    Sunoh.ai
    EHR-bundle pick
Subscription — often bundled with EHR plans

Positioned as the affordable ambient scribe inside existing EHR workflows — if your practice already lives in a compatible system, integration and billing are one conversation instead of two vendors.

  5. 5
    ScribeMD
    Budget entry
    Web · iOS — subscription

A lower-priced entrant aimed at smaller practices. Worth a trial alongside Freed if price is the deciding factor — but do the trial on a full clinic day, not a quiet afternoon.

  6. 6
    Chartnote
    Template-first
    Web — subscription

Started life as smart templates and macros for EHR note-writing (dot phrases that expand into full note sections), and layered AI scribe features on top. The fit is clinicians whose notes are already template-driven.

Where a general tool is enough

Referral and consult letters

You're dictating your own words from scratch — no patient conversation to capture, so no ambient scribe needed. Record the letter, transcribe it, paste it into the EHR.

Research and interviews

Qualitative research, case interviews, journal-club recordings — transcription with no clinical pipeline attached. Upload and get clean, quotable text.

Education and talks

Grand rounds, lectures and conference talks you want as text for notes or handouts. General transcription handles these perfectly well.

Admin and email

The non-clinical half of a practice day — policies, emails, meeting notes — has zero reason to go through a medical-scribe subscription.

Questions, answered

What's the difference between AI medical dictation and an ambient AI scribe?

Dictation converts words you speak on purpose into text — the classic talk-to-type, now with AI cleanup. An ambient scribe records the whole patient visit and drafts the clinical note from the conversation. Different products, different compliance profiles, different prices — most "AI medical dictation" searches are really about the second one.

Is voicememotext HIPAA compliant?

No — and we won't pretend otherwise. We're a general transcription tool: we don't sign BAAs and we're not built for protected-health-information workflows. Use us for dictation and recordings without patient-identifiable content (letters, research, education, admin). For clinical encounters, use a dedicated medical scribe with a signed BAA — that's what they're for.

Do AI scribes actually save time?

The evidence base is still forming, but the direction is consistent: physician surveys cited by the AMA put documentation burden at about an hour a day, and early-adopter reports describe getting most of that back. The honest caveat: the draft still needs review — the time saved depends on how much editing your specialty's notes need.

How much do AI medical scribes cost?

Independent tools typically run on per-clinician subscriptions, with free trials or free tiers (Freed, Heidi and ScribeMD all have a way in). Enterprise-integrated deployments like DeepScribe use custom pricing. If a practice's main need is the simpler half — dictated letters and non-clinical audio — a general transcription plan costs a fraction of that.

Can I transcribe patient audio with a general tool?

Only if the recording contains no patient-identifiable information and your organization's policies allow it. If a recording includes a patient conversation, it's PHI — it belongs in a HIPAA-compliant workflow with a signed BAA, not in a general-purpose tool. When in doubt, don't.
