Android voicemail to text, without the carrier lottery

On Android, voicemail transcription is decided by your carrier: free on T-Mobile, $2.99/month on Verizon, capped at 45 seconds on AT&T. Upload the audio here and get accurate text in seconds — free.

Android has no single answer for voicemail transcription — your carrier decides. T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail app transcribes for free. Verizon shows you the message list but wants $2.99/month per line for the text. AT&T transcribes only the first 45 seconds. And if your carrier or MVNO doesn't support visual voicemail at all, there's no transcript and no toggle to turn one on.

Google Voice is the usual workaround: it transcribes for free, but it guesses the language automatically — English messages sometimes come back in Spanish — and it only covers voicemail that arrives in Google Voice in the first place.

The shortcut that skips all of it: save or share the voicemail as an audio file and upload it here. Whisper detects the language and transcribes 90+ of them, punctuation included — three files a day free, no account, no carrier involved.

When to transcribe here instead

Verizon's $2.99/month paywall

Basic Visual Voicemail lists your messages but transcription is a Premium add-on. Uploading the same audio here costs nothing.

AT&T's 45-second cap

AT&T transcripts stop at 45 seconds — and the point of the message often comes after. A file upload transcribes the whole thing.

Carriers and MVNOs without VVM

No visual voicemail means no built-in transcript anywhere on the phone. The audio-file route works on any Android, any plan.

Questions, answered

Can Android transcribe voicemail to text?

It depends on your carrier and app. Pixel phones transcribe voicemails in Google's Phone app for free; T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail app includes transcription; Samsung's Visual Voicemail app has a transcription toggle where the carrier supports it. Verizon reserves transcription for its $2.99/month Premium Visual Voicemail, and AT&T truncates transcripts at 45 seconds.

How do I turn on voicemail transcription on Android?

Open the Phone app → menu → Settings → Voicemail and look for Visual Voicemail and Voicemail Transcription toggles, or open your carrier's Visual Voicemail app → Settings. If the toggles aren't there, your carrier doesn't support it — uploading the voicemail audio here is the fallback that always works.

Why is Google Voice's voicemail transcription wrong?

Google Voice transcribes for free but auto-detects the language with no way to set it — English messages sometimes come back in Spanish — and accuracy drops with noise and accents. It also only covers voicemail that arrives in Google Voice. Uploading the audio file gives you a cleaner transcript in 90+ languages.

How much does Verizon charge for voicemail to text on Android?

Verizon's Basic Visual Voicemail on Android is free but doesn't transcribe. Premium Visual Voicemail, which adds transcription, is $2.99/month per line. Transcribing the same voicemail here is free for three files a day.

How do I save a voicemail as an audio file on Android?

In your visual voicemail app, open the message and use the share or export option — share it to Files or Drive, or email it to yourself. Voicemails usually export as .amr, .m4a or .mp3, and all of them are supported here.

Is my voicemail private?

Your file is processed in memory to produce the transcript and is never stored. We keep no copy of your audio.
